This is the eighth track on our upcoming album "Chasing Identity". Each song on the album is about a different thing that people put their identity in.
It’s common to hear people say, “You can’t love others until you love yourself.” But is that actually true? Do we have to wait to love others until we “love ourselves”? I believe we truly get the most fulfillment out of life when we choose to love and serve others despite how we feel about ourselves. That we truly find out more about who we are through loving and serving others. As Christians, we aren’t told to love people only after a certain point in time, when we feel that we’ve worked on ourselves enough to be ready. We’re just told to love people, period. To serve them, always.
Our new song “Waiting to Start” is about a person who doesn’t feel “ready”. Doesn’t feel ready for a relationship, doesn’t feel ready to take a chance on a new career, doesn’t feel ready to pursue what God has for them. They feel completely stuck, and are waiting for the point when they feel complete enough to move forward. This is a place that both Emma and I have been at various points in our lives. But we’ve found that when we step out in faith, that when we trust Jesus and obey what He commands us to do, He provides and we grow through it. We become ready through the process of starting, not through waiting to start.
lyrics
Staring hopelessly at my reflection
There’s so much left to fix before I move
But how can I change while I’m stuck in one place
Self pity will just have to wait
I still have to love when I don’t like who I am
Is it you or is it me
Or are we all falling apart
And until we feel complete
Our world is waiting to start
The empty search for meaning inward
I’d love myself if I knew what that meant
Forgetting the existential crisis
‘Cause I still have much more to do here
And people to serve while becoming who I am
Is it you or is it me
Or are we all falling apart
And until we feel complete (finally)
Our world is waiting to start
Oh, will I ever be ready, ever be ready
To finally feel complete
Will I ever be ready or will they forget me
If I never do anything
Oh, will I ever be ready, ever be ready
To finally feel complete
Will I ever be ready or will they forget me
If I never do anything
Oh I’m losing everything
Is it you, or is it me?
Or are we falling….
Is it you or is it me
Or are we all falling apart
And until we feel complete (finally)
Our world is waiting to start
Will I ever be ready
Ever be ready
